Bavaria Highlights - itinerary 8 days / 7 nights
Day 1: Arrive in Munich, Germany
Arrive at Munich International Airport. Meet your tour guide who will travel with you the next days. Transfer to your hotel. Check-in and briefing. Enjoy your first evening in Germany with a typical Bavarian dinner at a top rated restaurant offering local food and drinks.
Day 2: Munich - full day city and culture tour
Discover Munich and enjoy the Bavarian lifestyle. Sightseeing in and around Munich: Nymphenburg Palace, Marienplatz, Glockenspiel, Frauenkirche, Viktualienmarkt open-air farmers market, English Garden, Chinese Tower beer garden, Isar river, Odeonsplatz, Olympic Park, BMW world and a lot of other sights nearby. Enjoy lunch at a beer garden during summer time with live music. Depending on your interests visit museums or other places of interests.
Day 3: Chiemsee - day excursion
Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria. Travel by train from Munich to Prien / Chiemsee. Take a boat to the islands of Chiemsee (Herreninsel and Fraueninsel). Enjoy the panoramic view onto the German Alps while cruising on the Chiemsee. Herreninsel is famous for the Herrenchiemsee palace of Ludwig II of Bavaria. Visit the palace on a guided tour. Fraueninsel houses an active Benedictine convent. Visit the island on a circuit walk. Travel back to Munich by train in the late afternoon.
Day 4: Neuschwanstein & Linderhof castle - day excursion
Germany is known for its castles and palaces. Visit two of the most impressive castles today. Neuschwanstein is Germanys most famous castle builtin the 19th-century on a hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen. The famous King Ludwig II of Bavaria built the castle as a retreat and in honour of Richard Wagner. Linderhof Palace is located near Ettal Abbey in a steep valley in the middle of the Bavarian mountains. It is the smallest palace built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Linderhof is inspired by Versailles. Especially the gardens surrounding Linderhof Palace are impressive. Return to Munich in the late afternoon.
Day 5: Regensburg - city tour
Take the train from Munich to Regensburg. Discover Regensburg on a walking tour. Visit the main attractions like the Dom (Cathedral), Regensburg Sausage Kitchen, the Porta Praetoria, the Church of St. James, the church of Obermünster, the Goldener Turm (golden tower), the Old Town Hall, the Gothic villa of the king of Bavaria on the bank of the Danube. St. Emmeram's Abbey, now known as Schloss Thurn und Taxis, is a huge castle owned by the powerful Thurn and Taxis family.
Day 6: Nuremberg - city tour
Travel from Regensburg to Nuremberg by train. Nuremberg dates back to the middle ages. The city is rich in history and offers many interesting sights you have to visit: Nuremberg Castle, Heilig-Geist-Spital, Hauptmarkt dominated by the Gothic Frauenkirche (setting for the famous Christmas market) and the Gothic Schöner Brunnen, Gothic Lorenzkirche (St. Laurence church), churches located inside the city walls like St. Laurence's, Saint Clare's, Saint Martha's, Saint James the Greater's, Saint Giles's, and Saint Elisabeth's. Worth a visit is the Germanisches Nationalmuseum - Germany's largest museum of cultural history.
Day 7: Bamberg - day excursion
Travel by train from Nuremberg to Bamberg. Bamberg extends over seven hills and the old town of Bamberg is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On each hill you find a beautiful church. This has led to Bamberg being called the Rome of Franconia. Sightseeing to visit the main sights of Bamberg: Bamberg Cathedral, Alte Hofhaltung, Neue Residenz, old town hall, Klein-Venedig (Little Venice), Michaelsberg Abbey, Altenburg castle. Return to Nuremberg in the late afternoon by train.
Day 8: Munich departure
Return to Munich by train and travel to Munich International Airport. Or extend your tour for example to Salzburg in Austria.
