Next to the river Neckar, Heidelberg is one of Germany's most beautiful towns. In 1386, Germany's first university was established here. In the late 17th century, French incursions totally destroyed medieval Heidelberg, including the famous castle. The town was rebuilt in the early 18th-century in Baroque style.
The most interesting places to visit are: Alte Brücke (the old bridge) which is a nine-span bridge over the river Neckar; Haus zum Ritter (house of the knight) built in 1592 which is a fine example of German Mannerist style; Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit) built in 1400 is the town's oldest sanctuary.
Heidelberg Castle is a vast residential complex. It was built between the 13th and 17th centuries. Originally a Gothic castle (now mostly in ruins) in the 16th century the castle became one of Germany's most beautiful Renaissance residences.

Our recommended itinerary to visit Heidelberg (extended tour):
09:00am: The tour guide and chauffeur will pick you up at your hotel. We will drive from Stuttgart to Heidelberg on the Autobahn A6. It will take us about 1 hour 30 minutes.
10:30am: We arrive at Heidelberg. We will meet our local tour guide and start the guided tour. First we will visit the historic centre of Heidelberg.
12:00am: Time for lunch. We will have lunch at a upper class restaurant next to the Neckar river. You can enjoy the local food and drinks like wine and beer while having a nice view over the Neckar valley.
01:30pm: After lunch we will visit the famous castle of Heidelberg which is located above the historic city center. We will take the cable car up the mountain to visit the castle and museum.
04:00pm: We will drive back to Stuttgart taking the panoramic road along the Neckar valley. It will take us about 2 hours.
06:00pm: We will arrive in Stuttgart and drop you off at your hotel.

09:00am: Meeting point is Stuttgart main train station. We will take our train to Heidelberg.
10:30am: We arrive at Heidelberg train station. We walk to the hsitoric city centre and on the way we already visit impressive historic bulidings and churches and feel the atmosphere of this historic university town. We will cross the river Neckar using the historic bridges to have a nice vie on the city of Heidelberg.
12:00pm: Time for lunch. We will have lunch at a nicetypical restaurant next to the Neckar river. You can enjoy the local food and drinks like wine and beer while having a stunning view over the Neckar valley.
01:30pm: After lunch we will visit the famous castle of Heidelberg which is located above the historic city center. We will take the cable car up the mountain to visit the castle and museum.
03:00pm: Walk back to the train station. We will drive back to Stuttgart taking the train.
approx 05:00pm: Arrive in Stuttgart at the main train station where the day tour will end.
